How to Get Your Car Ready for an Ohio Winter: 7 Checks Before the First Snow

Cleveland winters don't mess around. Between lake-effect snow, road salt, and those surprise October flurries, your car takes a beating from November through March. The good news: a little prep work now — before the first real cold snap — can save you from a dead battery in a West Side parking lot or a slide on an icy Lorain Road.

Here are seven checks worth doing before winter arrives.

1. Test Your Battery

Cold weather is brutal on batteries. If yours is more than three years old, have it load-tested — most auto parts stores do this free, or we can check it during any visit. Corroded terminals? Clean them now, not when you're stranded.

2. Check Your Tires (and Consider Winter Tires)

All-season tires are fine for mild winters, but Cleveland doesn't do mild. Check your tread depth — if it's below 4/32", you're losing grip on wet and slushy roads. Winter tires are a worthwhile investment if you commute daily on I-90 or the Shoreway.

3. Top Off and Test Your Antifreeze

Your coolant should be a 50/50 mix of antifreeze and water, good down to well below zero. Low or weak coolant risks an overheated engine in traffic or, worse, a cracked block on the coldest night of the year.

4. Replace Worn Wiper Blades

If your wipers streak or chatter, replace them before the first snow. Fill your washer fluid with a winter-rated formula that won't freeze in the reservoir. Visibility is everything in lake-effect whiteouts.

5. Inspect Brakes and Suspension

Stopping distances get longer on ice — worn brakes make it worse. Have your pads, rotors, and suspension checked. Potholes from last winter may have knocked your alignment out, which shows up as pulling or uneven tire wear.

6. Check Your Heater and Defroster

Run the heat and defroster now. If the cabin isn't warming up or the windshield won't clear, get it looked at before you're scraping ice in the dark at 6 AM.

7. Pack a Winter Emergency Kit

Blanket, flashlight, jumper cables, ice scraper, small shovel, sand or kitty litter for traction, and a phone charger. Keep it in the trunk all season.
